Charge Controllers are Vital for systems that use batteries. The typical charge controller has two functions: HVD, and LVD. HVD (high voltage disconnect) disconnects your charging source (Solar PV Panel) from over charging your batteries.
The LVD function disconnects your LOAD from the BATTERY, keeping you from Over-Discharging your BATTERY. These two functions protect your battery.
Sizing the right charge controller for your system depends on your AMPERAGE of your charging source. This includes 4 Amp, 6 Amp, 10 Amp, 12 Amp, 40 Amp and 60 Amps. Battery Voltages 12, 24, and 48 are usual.
Charge Controllers can also be used as Lighting Controllers, and some offer Maximum Power Point Tracking as features.
Charge controllers are sized by Amps and Volts, and are intended to protect and control batteries. The Outback MX60 MPPT charge controller can be useed with battery systems from 12 to 60 VDC.
